Hamilton offers help to save Amazon rainforest

Lewis Hamilton has offered to help “in any way” in order to help minimise the damage in the Amazon rainforest, which is currently being devastated by widespread fires.

The Amazon rainforest in Brazil is the biggest tropical forest on earth and is home to over a million different species of plants and animals, as well as people. From January to August, there has been a staggering 84% increase in fires within the rainforest from the same period in 2018.

The cause been reported to be the deliberate setting of fires by mining, construction and cattle ranching companies in order to create more space for production, leading to huge criticism being aimed at president Jair Bolsonaro.

Hamilton says he is “devastated” by the destruction of the Amazon, which provides the planet with 20% of its oxygen.

“It is devastating to see our world suffer,” he wrote on Instagram.

The Amazon rainforest is burning at a record rate and there have been 80% more fires this year compared to last. Scientist refer to the Amazon as the earth’s lungs as it produces 20% of the oxygen we breath.
