Formula 1 is preparing for a historic weekend. Kimi Antonelli heads to the United States Grand Prix with a 102-point lead over teammate George Russell. The 20-year-old Italian could even become world champion on October 25, but several things would have to fall into place. What exactly needs to happen for Mercedes to celebrate a new world champion in Texas? We break down the numbers and possible scenarios.

Antonelli has the title within reach

The Singapore Grand Prix has brought the championship battle into a decisive phase. Antonelli finished third, while Russell managed only ninth place. This result extended the gap between the two Mercedes drivers to more than 100 points. The championship standings after the Singapore Grand Prix, ahead of the United States Grand Prix, are as follows:

F1 Driver Standings

Formula 1 Driver Standings

Position Driver Team Points
1 Kimi Antonelli Mercedes 340
2 George Russell Mercedes 238
3 Lewis Hamilton Ferrari 229
4 Max Verstappen Red Bull 221
5 Charles Leclerc Ferrari 215
6 Lando Norris McLaren 201

Antonelli therefore holds a 102-point advantage over Russell and a 111-point lead over Hamilton. That is a substantial gap, especially with only six race weekends remaining on the calendar. A maximum of 150 points is available from the remaining Grands Prix. This means Antonelli has not yet mathematically secured the title, but he does have the opportunity to settle the championship battle in Austin.

What are the bookmakers saying?

Bookmakers see Kimi Antonelli as the 2026 Formula 1 world champion, that much is certain. However, there is an important difference between winning the world championship and securing the title in Austin. In fact, Max Verstappen is currently the favourite to win the United States Grand Prix with most bookmakers. Fans are not letting that discourage them. Many are taking advantage of major promotions, including the Stake Promo Code, to place their bets ahead of the race. October 25 promises to be an exciting day, not only on the circuit but also in living rooms around the world.

Winning and hoping his rivals struggle

What exactly does Antonelli need to do to secure the world championship in Austin? The most important requirement is that Antonelli must win the United States Grand Prix, earning 25 points. However, even if he crosses the finish line first, the championship will not automatically be decided. His closest rivals must also drop enough points.

According to the official Formula 1 calculations cited in the original article, Antonelli can become world champion in Austin if the following conditions are met:

1. Antonelli wins the race and collects 25 points.

2. Russell finishes ninth or lower, scoring no more than two points.

3. Hamilton finishes fifth or lower, earning a maximum of ten points.

Verstappen, Leclerc and Norris can no longer interfere with the championship outcome in this scenario, as an Antonelli victory in Austin would automatically eliminate them from title contention.

The margins are narrow enough to keep things exciting. If Antonelli wins and Russell finishes ninth, the gap between the Mercedes teammates will increase to 125 points. That is exactly the maximum number of points Russell could still earn in the five remaining Grands Prix.

Why would that be enough? Because if two drivers finish level on points, the number of race victories can determine the championship. A victory in Austin would give Antonelli his ninth Grand Prix win of the season. Russell has three victories and, with five races remaining, could achieve a maximum of eight wins. Even if he managed to equal Antonelli's points total, he would therefore be unable to overtake him in the standings.

Victory in Austin is far from guaranteed

The numbers favour Antonelli, but the race in Austin promises to be anything but a formality. The Circuit of the Americas is a demanding track where qualifying performance, tyre management and strategic decisions can make a significant difference.

The race takes place over 56 laps, covering a total distance of approximately 308.4 kilometres. The steep climb towards the first corner provides opportunities to gain positions at the start. This is followed by fast sequences of corners and long straights where overtaking is possible. For Antonelli, this means he needs a car that is competitive both through high-speed corners and along the straights. A poor start or an incorrect tyre choice could cost him victory. Mercedes must therefore optimise the car's setup and tyre strategy to suit the conditions in Texas. His championship lead gives Mercedes some breathing room, but the opportunity to secure the title with five races still remaining is too significant to take lightly.

What if Antonelli does not win in Austin?

If Antonelli fails to win, the championship battle will remain open. Of course, that does not mean he will lose his substantial advantage. Even a second- or third-place finish could strengthen his position, depending on the results of Russell and Hamilton. A podium finish would provide another valuable haul of points, while a poor result for Russell could maintain or even increase Antonelli's lead. In that case, attention would turn to the following races in Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. There are still 150 points available before the championship concludes. Antonelli's 102-point advantage is considerable, but not insurmountable. A series of Russell victories combined with a few difficult weekends for Antonelli could bring the championship battle back to life.

Will Antonelli make history?

If Antonelli secures the title in Austin, he will make Formula 1 history. At 20 years old, he would become the youngest world champion ever, surpassing Sebastian Vettel's record. Vettel won the championship in 2010 at the age of 23. Antonelli would also become the first Italian world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Italy has therefore been waiting more than seven decades for another champion in the pinnacle of motorsport.

The achievement would also represent a special milestone for Mercedes. Antonelli was developed within the team's programme and quickly earned a seat alongside Russell following Lewis Hamilton's departure. The fact that the young Italian is already competing for the world championship in his second season highlights the confidence Mercedes has placed in his talent. The United States Grand Prix could well be the weekend when an exceptional season is crowned with a historic world championship.
