Well, that's new

A former Williams F1 development driver has announced a £100k investment into a new app, dubbed 'Sports Tinder'.

Le Mans GTE Pro class winner Alex Lynn, who was a Williams development driver in 2015 and 2016, is now involved with the Pacer app, which told City AM that its users will not 'initially sign up looking for romance', before going on to point out the app's potential for developing a social sporting connection into something more.

A cynic might point out that there's already a way to go on sports-related dates on dating apps: namely 'matching with someone on a dating app who has similar interests and asking if they want to go for a run, or a game of padel, or similar'.

Pacer's place in the market is a curious one - outwardly projecting a wholesome, 'find some new training buddies' vibe while its newest investor contrasts it to 'conventional dating apps' and its founder Dylan Morris-Jones fails to shy away from the potential dating aspect of the app.

Former F1 prospect: Sport is one of the best ways to meet people

“Unlike conventional dating apps," Pacer said, "users do not initially sign up looking for romance. Instead, they find people who share their passion for sport – with the potential for friendship, community or something more.”

Ex-Formula E race winner Lynn told City AM: “Sport has always been one of the best ways to meet people. You spend time together, you push each other and you naturally build a connection.

“When you’re living in a city like London, there are so many people around you, but it can still be surprisingly difficult to meet people you genuinely have something in common with.

“Pacer makes that first step much easier. You might join because you want someone to train with, but if you meet someone you really click with, who knows where that can lead?”

“London is an incredible city," founder Morris-Jones added, "but it can also be incredibly lonely. You can have thousands of people around you every day and still struggle to make genuine connections.

“Sport changes that because you immediately have something in common. The primary purpose of the app is to find your sporting community. But if two people meet through sport and it develops into friendship, or something romantic, then that’s a natural consequence of putting compatible people together.”
