F1 2021 launch date and story mode revealed by Codemasters

Formula 1 video game developer Codemasters has revealed details of the latest entry into the series which will be launched on July 16.

F1 2021 is the first entry into the franchise that will be available on next-generation consoles including the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S. It is also the first to be published since Electronic Arts completed its acquisition of Codemasters, one of the oldest UK-based game developers who are also responsible for National Hockey League (NHL) and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) games.

The headline addition to the game is a new story mode entitled 'Braking Point'. This allows players to begin a career competing in F2 and fighting to earn their promotion to F1.

Returning to the franchise following his 2019 appearance is that of rival character Devon Butler, the voice of whom can be heard prominently in the official trailer announcing the launch date.

“Braking Point is an exciting innovation that has been years in the making," said Lee Mather, franchise game director at Codemasters.

"We are proud to expand the game experience and allow players to live the highs and lows of life in Formula 1 both on and off the track.

“Braking Point transforms the game and puts players centre stage in the greatest racing spectacle on the planet.”

Fans wishing to tackle Imola, Portimão or the Jeddah Street Circuit will have to wait to get their chance, although it has been confirmed the venues will feature as free downloadable post-launch content. No date has been announced.

As in recent years, a deluxe edition will be available alongside the regular game, with "seven soon-to-be-unveiled iconic F1 drivers for use" in the 'My Team' mode, "complete with customisation content, 18,000 PitCoins, the Braking Point Content Pack, and three days early access".
