Rosberg "gutted" for Schumacher and Ilott after F1 debut fogged off
Nico Rosberg has revealed to being "gutted" for Mick Schumacher and Callum Ilott after witnessing their planned Formula 1 debuts fogged off.
First practice for the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nürburgring had to be cancelled due to the poor weather conditions that prevented the medical helicopter from flying.
Ferrari driver academy duo Schumacher and Ilott, fighting for this year's F2 title, were supposed to make their bows for Alfa Romeo and Haas respectively, but will now be forced to wait as they try and push for a 2021 race seat.
Talking on Sky Sports F1, former F1 champion Rosberg said he was "so gutted for Mick and Callum. You are raring to go in your first session and this happens."
When Formula 1 announced the October slot for the Nürburgring, eyebrows were raised due to the prospect of such weather conditions.
Rosberg, however, warned against criticising the organisation after such a mammoth effort to create a calendar surrounding the issues faced this season.
"What a phenomenal job F1 has done in the time of corona," he said.
"It doesn't really surprise anybody because we have some of the greatest engineering geniuses in the world all down here, starting off with Ross Brawn who is leading F1 and he, of course, put a part of this plan together and has really outsmarted it and done a fantastic job.
"It is great for all of us. We are so happy to be able to watch the racing and also experience new tracks like Mugello. It's fantastic."
