Liberty Media refuse to give GP assurances to Sao Paulo

Could F1 move to Rio?

Liberty Media chief Chase Carey admits that talks are ongoing between Formula 1 and Brazilian Grand Prix organisers in Sao Paulo for a new deal to host the race going forward, but didn’t give assurances as there are other locations interested too.

Over the years, the Brazilian GP has switched locations back and forth from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro, but since 1990 the former has enjoyed hosting duties through their Interlagos circuit.

With the current deal to host the race up in 2020, there is speculation that it could move to another location again - something which Carey alluded to after the 2019 edition of the race this past weekend.

“We have interests, we have multiple partners that are interested,” the F1 boss said.

“It is certainly our goal to continue to race in Brazil for a long time.”

“Generally, there isn’t a specific deadline. Our general practice has been to announce the schedule for the next season around the summer.”

However, as far as Sao Paulo Mayor Joao Doria is concerned, his city will be the host for the next decade just as long as a deal can be struck sooner rather than later.

“As far as we are concerned, F1 will be in Sao Paulo for another ten years. We will move forward in the first week of December with Chase Carey and his team to formalise this ten-year deal,” the Mayor said.
