Hamilton on retirement: I'm an artist, and I haven't finished my masterpiece
Lewis Hamilton insists he is not thinking about retiring from Formula 1 yet, as he believes there is still work to be done to finish his career “masterpiece”.
At the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, the Brit secured enough points by finishing second to claim his sixth drivers’ championship which puts him just one behind the record holder with seven, Michael Schumacher.
The possibility of becoming the most successful driver in history, it seems, is too much of a pull for Hamilton to be dragged away from F1, and at 34-years-old, he is adamant he still has plenty in the tank to keep going.
"Retire...? What...? No, nope I don't fancy retiring right now,” he said after the race.
Hamilton could join Ferrari - WolffRead more
“It's a scary thought that one day, we athletes have to hang up and stop doing what we've loved our whole lives. I don't feel like I'm at my peak yet but I'm nearby, I feel energised. I feel like I can still run a marathon.
"I really like the idea of an artist creating a masterpiece and what I do is an art form. I like the idea that I'm trying to create a masterpiece and it's still not finished yet.
“How I get to that point, I don't know but it's going to take a lot of hard work, dedication, focus, help from great people around me, but I know we can do more so we're going to keep pushing,"
It remains to be seen whether the masterpiece could be completed with Mercedes, however, as team principal Toto Wolff recently admitted that it is “possible” Hamilton could join Ferrari in the future.
