Hamilton's plan to win title number five at COTA
Hamilton's plan to win title number five at COTA
Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes will not change their approach at the United States Grand Prix, despite a fifth title beckoning at the Circuit of the Americas. Hamilton will be crowned champion if he outscores Sebastian Vettel by eight points in Austin, Texas on Sunday.
Hamilton has won the last four grands prix and heads to COTA having won there in each of the last four years.
If both winning runs are stretched to five on Sunday, Vettel must follow Hamilton home in second to keep the title fight alive at next week's Mexican GP.
Although he seemingly has one hand on the trophy, Hamilton says the approach remains the same from all 17 previous races this year.
"This feels like another weekend, another race weekend that we have and we want to win," Hamilton said.
"It's a simple goal for us, we just arrive to try do the same thing.
"The weather's up and down and the goal is just to perform as we have in previous races. We're not thinking of it in any other way.
"As a team, none of us are saying: 'How cool would it be if it happened this weekend or the next.'
"We're not focusing on ifs, we're focusing on making sure that we deliver. There's still 100 points available, so you can just never be complacent in life. And with a championship as intense as this, we expect Ferrari to punch back hard here this weekend.
"We can't be relaxed in any way shape or form. we've got to make sure we come here and raise the bar again.
"So I'm definitely not thinking this weekend how it's going to feel if we do the job, because I've got to do the job and that adds more pressure and you don't need more pressure.
"[I'm] focusing on trying to make sure I drive the best I've driven all year long."
