Monaco boring compared to Indy 500 - Alonso

Fernando Alonso says the Monaco Grand Prix is boring compared to the Indianapolis 500, as he makes his return to Monte Carlo after skipping the race in order to take part at the Brickyard last year. Alonso almost won the Indy500 on his debut a year ago, but says he has no hopes of success back at Monaco.

The claim is the latest in a long line of exasperated Alonso observations about F1's "predictable" nature.

With a move to McLaren having effectively ended his hopes of winning a third F1 title, Alonso is instead targeting becoming just the second driver to win the 'Triple Crown' of Monaco, Indy and Le Mans 24 Hours - which he will tackle with Toyota later this year.

With two Monaco wins under his belt, Alonso says he has no regrets at skipping the race last year and says a return in 2018 does not fill him with the same excitement he felt in IndyCar.

"I think there is time for everything," Alonso said. "I grew up here in Europe and I grew up in a Formula 1 environment.

"I dreamed about Formula 1 when I was a go-kart driver and I joined F1 when I was 19 and I was battling with Michael Schumacher and I had the life that I dreamed of.

"But sometimes to go out of this world and experience those kinds of big races is quite beneficial. I think looking back now, 12 months ago, I was enjoying a lot that experience.

"I came here [Monaco] and I didn't miss it [Indy]. It was good last year, I had my two weeks there and probably this time last year we had finished qualifying and we were P5 with a high chance to win a race, or at least the same chance of all 33 drivers there.

"Here, you come and you have no chances and no possibilities, and whatever your inspiration will be on Saturday you cannot overcome the deficit of the car.

"This will be a train of cars on Sunday, there [Indy 500] it will be a chance of a last lap overtake until the very last moment. I think it was good 12 months ago, it's still good now, but it was a great experience."
