De Vries backed for Williams as late contender emerges

Williams recently confirmed that Nicholas Latifi will depart the team at the end of the season but who will replace the Canadian?

Latifi struggled to match George Russell during their two years together and he has again been found wanting in partnering Alex Albon this F1 season.

Being thoroughly outclassed by Nyck de Vries at Monza, with the Dutch driver making his race debut as a late substitute for Albon, was viewed as the final nail in the coffin.

With Williams holding one of the final three seats left on the grid, it has no shortage of options to choose from.

GPFans readers have clearly identified a favoured target, however, with De Vries taking 58 per cent of the vote.

The experienced hands on the list scored a mixed reaction, with Daniel Ricciardo the second-favourite on 22 per cent and Nico Hulkenberg scoring just three per cent.

F2 and Williams Academy driver Logan Sargeant trailed De Vries and Ricciardo on 13 per cent.

Before Sebastian Vettel kicked the driver transfer market into overdrive, Oscar Piastri had been strongly linked with a loan move to Williams.

But the fallout of the Australian's move to McLaren has seen Jack Doohan emerge as a late contender for an F1 drive, likely in a similar arrangement as had been planned for Piastri.

Although we did not feature Doohan on our list, AndyWoodford04 put forward the 19-year-old for consideration.
