Fernando Alonso will start from the back of the grid for his home race in Spain after Alpine elected to change his power unit

Alonso qualified 17th after a troubled qualifying session where a miscommunication late in Q1 saw him end up blocked behind McLaren's Lando Norris as he prepared for his final hot lap.

With only Aston Martin's Lance Stroll and Williams duo Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi due to start behind the Spaniard, Alpine has elected to fit a new PU and take the penalties applied.

The team has fitted a new internal combustion engine, turbocharger, MGU-H, MGU-K, energy store and exhaust system, with all the elements beyond the prescribed number for a season.

Alonso's grid slot is hs worst for the Spanish Grand Prix. His previous lowest was 18th in his debut year of 2001 with Minardi.
