Steiner "not betting" on Haas catching Williams

Steiner, Haas

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has conceded he is "not betting" on his team overcoming Williams in this year's constructors' championship.

Williams made the most of the chaotic Hungarian Grand Prix to secure its first double points finish since the 2018 Italian Grand Prix with Nicholas Latifi seventh and George Russell eighth.

The haul of 10 points moved the team clear of both Haas and Alfa Romeo to eighth in the standings.

Mick Schumacher scored Haas' best F1 result of the season with 12th place but Steiner is not optimistic the team will surpass its rivals by the end of the season.

Asked of Haas' ability to catch Williams, Steiner said: “The chances are very low.

"I’m very realistic about these things but Williams didn’t expect to make the points they made.

"They did a good job and ended up in the right place at the right time. That is how racing happens."

Despite his bleak outlook, Steiner added the caveat that Haas could be in position to take advantage should another chaotic race unfold.

“That is why I always say you always have to try to do your best," he said.

"They were there when there were some points given away, that is what they did.

“But I’m not betting we will get more points than them.”
