Horner provides update on "battered and bruised" Verstappen

Christian Horner has revealed Max Verstappen "felt like he'd done a few rounds with Tyson Fury" after his dramatic collision with Lewis Hamilton at the British Grand Prix.

The championship rivals ignited the F1 title battle with the contact at Copse on lap one at Silverstone which sent Verstappen spearing into the barriers with a force of 51g and sparked furious debate over the cause of the crash.

Red Bull team principal Horner stated it was "the biggest accident" in Verstappen's career and the "first and hopefully last time" the Dutchman has been taken to hospital as a result of an accident.

"When Max was unable to respond on the team radio, time stood still," said Horner in his column for Red Bull.

"In that moment you forget everything else apart from the safety of the driver, a person who is like family to all of us and it reminds you of the risk and reward in our sport.

"When he was finally able to speak, the relief was enormous and then to see him helped out of the car by the medical team, albeit somewhat dazed and in need of support, was an incredible feeling.

"Max was monitored closely and later released from hospital at around 22:00 [Sunday, July 18] and was able to travel home the following day.

"I spoke to him again on Monday [July 19] morning and he felt like he'd done a few rounds with Tyson Fury.

"He was battered and bruised but feeling lucky and grateful to the medical team, as we all are, and in true Max style he was already trying to put it out of his mind and look ahead to Hungary."

Horner praises F1 safety standards

In the aftermath of the accident, FIA medical rescue coordinator Dr Ian Roberts revealed he was initially concerned he and his team would be dealing with a roll, given the severity and speed of the impact.

With Verstappen escaping relatively unscathed, Horner added: "A huge amount of credit must go to the safety standards of these cars, the Halo and the barrier systems because the impact was such that it actually broke Max’s seat.

"The car could have quite easily flipped over which was an initial concern voiced by the first responding medical team but fortunately it didn't."

It's good that he is ok, butletshopehelearns from yet another aggressive move - he has made too many and expected others to back away so no accident happens, nowperhapshe will think twice !!

Max was the leader.. he got hit ftom behind... how the hell can he be the aggressive one then? it was Hamilton's fault.. left front hits right rear.. ergo, Hamilton is the aggressive one.. Hamilton always was, and always will be.. the past has shown that he did these kind of things before.. but the gloves are off.. oh and if someone should learn something its Hamilton.. he is the one that expect others to move or back down for him, hes nothing without Bottas..

Max got hit behind because he was 'aggressive' and assumed Lewis would yield. Lewis tried and went full on the brakes... Max gloves have been off in the past many times where he has been lucky to get away with it(either FIA, no damage or the others yielding) .

Anyway It's called a racing incident if you ask me

Max wasn't hit from behind. He was hit from the side. It was already proven that Hamilton was substantially next to Verstappen at the entrance of the corner.

Support who you want but please look at the facts. Hamilton was ruled as mostly guilty but not totally. Verstappen also had guilt in this, and if you think that Hamilton is the aggressive driver between these two, you must be new to the sport

So true. As one of the few who have actually barrelled in into Copse I can tell you it isn't easy to back of or change line, once you are set up for the corner you are pretty much stuck with it. Hamilton tried to back off but Max kept coming rather than play safe and drift a bit wider.

Maybe he will think twice next time he thinks, " here I come, move".

I truly feel sorry for Crashtappen for a collision that is completely avoidable.

Honer is fueling a lot of hate towards Hamilton with some of his comments. Why is it when a black athlete is dominate in his/her sport. If they are involved in any controversy they come under attack with racist abuse. Christian knows there are those kinds of fans in formula 1 and in my opinion he is giving them ammunition, stoking the flames of hate and abuse.
