Norris realises “dream” with Monaco Grand Prix podium

Lando Norris achieved a “dream” when he finished on the podium in his McLaren in Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix.

The British driver, who had qualified fifth, benefitted from the pre-race demise of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and the retirement of Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas to rise to third.

Norris held off a charging Sergio Perez in his Red Bull to finish behind winner Max Verstappen and former McLaren team-mate Carlos Sainz, who was second for new team Ferrari.

Norris said: “I don’t know what to say. I didn’t think I would be here today. It’s down to these guys [the McLaren team]. It’s always a dream to be on the podium here, it’s extra special.

“A bit of luck, I want to say some good driving and a good car all weekend, we’ve had a good weekend. Thanks to the boys and girls, this one’s for them. It is [extra special].”

Norris was greeted by Sainz as he spoke to interviewer David Coulthard after the race and was quick to point out the success of the Spanish driver and race winner Verstappen.

“Congrats to [Carlos] and Max,” he added. “It’s special here, I will cherish it. A beautiful trophy, which I am looking forward to getting as well.”
