Haas rookies Schumacher and Mazepin need to learn 'F1 fighting' - Steiner

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner expects rookies Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin to learn how to fight in Formula 1 after both suffered spins during the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Mazepin's race lasted just three corners as he spun off moments after the start, ensuring his maiden grand prix outing was the shortest of any driver since 2002 when Felipe Massa and Allan McNish were involved in a turn one collision in Australia.

It was not the Russian's first troubled moment as he spun four times overall which included two in qualifying.

Schumacher also spun on lap four following a safety car restart, an incident that left him embarrassed and claiming it would stay with him for a long time.

Reflecting on a tough weekend for his new pairing, Steiner said: “I think when you fight, they need to learn this fighting.

"Both of them went onto the throttle too harshly and then went on a kerb or something like this.

"These cars are so powerful that when the torque kicks you get a kick that you cannot recoup anymore."

Unlike his team-mate, Schumacher at least recovered from his spin before going on to finish the race 16th.

Steiner added: "This is down to experience. I do not think they will do this again. They will spin again but not in a way they did in Bahrain.

“This was a new experience in a race, trying to fight with other cars and sometimes to be a bit too optimistic about how much traction you have got or how much the car can take with power from the engine.”
