Race of Champions to return in 2022 at Swedish snow circuit
F1 drivers have often emerged victorious from the motorsports event
The Race of Champions will be held on snow and ice for the first time when the event moves to Sweden for its return in 2022.
The once annual bonanza, last held in 2019, sees the best drivers from multiple motorsports disciplines go head to head on a split circuit that crosses over on itself.
After originally being held in Gran Canaria on a dirt course, the move to large sports stadia saw Formula 1 stars Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button and David Coulthard among others to become regular competitors.
President and co-founder of the event Fredrik Johnsson has indicated the move to Sweden has afforded organisers to create a more challenging layout for competitors.
"After organising the Race Of Champions in some of the most prestigious venues like the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium in Beijing, Stade de France in Paris, Wembley Stadium and London’s Olympic Stadium, it is a huge honour to be able to bring our event to my home country Sweden for the first time," he said.
"At ROC we are always looking for ways to put new exciting tests in front of some of the world’s top race drivers.
"In the past, that might have been a very tight track inside a stadium, but this time we will be able to build a longer, wider more spectacular track.
"The event will be unlike anything we are used to seeing and be one of the ultimate tests of a driver's car control."
Another of the draws to the event is the multitude of cars available to use during the event, meaning drivers are taken out of their comfort zones.
ROC has confirmed that in line with its carbon-neutrality push, an array of electric cars will be used during the event, with further details being announced closer to the race date.
"It is important that every motorsports series and event continue to look for ways to become environmentally responsible," added Johnsson.
"We expect ROC to be a carbon-neutral race in 2022 and are working toward that important milestone."
