Budget cap a "great change for the midfield teams" - Gasly
Even spending will promote close competition
Pierre Gasly has hailed the introduction of a budget cap into Formula 1 as a "great change", with the Frenchman believing it will finally close the gap between the front-running teams and the midfield.
In establishing the 2021 regulations, F1 put into legislation the first budget cap in the sport's history.
When the Covid-19 pandemic pushed back these regulations, certain teams campaigned for the $175 million cap to be reduced, and a compromise of $145m was agreed.
The Austrian Grand Prix showed how certain teams have managed to close the gap to the front slightly, but AlphaTauri driver Gasly feels the cap could result in midfield teams fighting on a regular basis towards the front.
"I think overall it's a really positive and great change for the midfield teams," said Gasly.
"At the moment, the main difference, obviously in terms of budget, we are talking about €150-200million difference between the top teams and the midfield teams, which creates a performance difference.
"Hopefully it's going to bring everybody more or less together, and also for us as the drivers, we want to be coming to every weekend thinking we have everything in our hands to make the difference which is, at the moment, not possible, because the cost has such a big impact on performance.
"I believe it's really good news."
