Formula 1 in talks to avoid UK quarantine restrictions

Formula 1 could be exempt from new quarantine measures due to be imposed by the British government, according to reports.

In his address to the British public on Sunday evening, prime minister Boris Johnson announced it would "soon be time" to introduce a quarantine period for new arrivals into the country.

“To prevent reinfection from abroad, I am serving notice that it will soon be the time, with transmission significantly lower, to impose quarantine on people coming into this country by air," Johnson said.

Without further details, this initially suggested F1 would face difficulties in resuming its season given seven of the 10 teams are based in the UK, while also casting doubt on the hopes of there being a British GP in mid-July.

It is understood, however, that F1 bosses are in talks with UK officials over how such quarantine could be avoided.

Although unconfirmed, it is assumed the UK would fall in line with other countries and impose a two-week quarantine period, with one-week required for those leaving.

With F1 planning for back-to-back races in Austria to be followed with back-to-back races at Silverstone to start the season in July, if quarantine cannot be avoided it would naturally throw into question such events.
