Albon has to keep improving to secure Red Bull seat

Alex Albon admits he needs to “keep improving” if he is to remain with Red Bull for the 2020 campaign and beyond, with the team yet to confirm who will partner Max Verstappen next year.

In the 2019 summer break, Albon was promoted to Red Bull from Toro Rosso to replace the underperforming Pierre Gasly, who was sent in the other direction to the team he left the year before.

The 23-year-old has impressed since the move, consistently finishing inside the top six without making the step on to a podium.

However, with crashes in Russia and China not particularly aiding his campaign to be retained by Red Bull, he knows improvements are required.

“I am happy with how things are going. Whether it is good enough, we will notice that automatically. I'm not too focused on that, if I'm honest. I mainly focus on the races,” he said ahead of the United States Grand Prix.

"If they are then satisfied with my results, they will of course hold me. But I have to keep improving. I also have the idea that there is more in the barrel. I will continue to push for the next few races.

Should Albon not be given the seat, it is likely he will return to Toro Rosso, and he admits this safety net has left him “not too worried” about the future at the moment.

“The goal is to stay with this team. Of course, I would like it if I know what will happen next year, but I'm not too worried about that,” he explained.

“In any case, there is a good chance that I will remain active in Formula 1 next year. Whether it's at Toro Rosso or at Red Bull, I'm not too worried about that."
