Ferrari back Schumacher for future in F1
'We believe he can be a good Formula 1 driver.'
Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto says the Scuderia expect to see Mick Schumacher in Formula 1.
The son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher was signed to Ferrari's Driver Academy at the start of this year after winning the European Formula 3 title in 2018.
He has graduated to Formula 2 with Prema and recently took his first win in Hungary and is likely to spend next year in the junior series, having previously stated he is willing to take his time before graduating to F1, having previously been linked with a race seat at Toro Rosso.
Fellow FDA member Callum Ilott is a racing rival in Formula 2 and the next academy member to step up to F1 may be a straight fight between them, with Charles Leclerc and Antonio Giovinazzi having done so in recent years.
Binotto has no doubts that Schumacher, still just 20, has what it takes to flourish at the highest level.
"Mick is making good progress, which we have expected in the past few years and now he is gaining valuable experience in Formula 2," Binotto told Bild.
"The moment will come where he is ready for Formula 1.
"We've invested a lot in him because we believe he can be a good Formula 1 driver."
Schumacher made his debut in current F1 machinery in April when he participated in the Bahrain test for both Alfa Romeo and Ferrari.
Only Max Verstappen managed to set a quicker time than Schumacher over the day he spent in the SF90.
