We've certainly become accustomed to the sight of Mercedes celebrating success in the past half-decade in Formula 1.

The Silver Arrows have swept the boards in the past five seasons and will likely do so again in 2019, with healthy leads in both championships putting Lewis Hamilton within reach of a sixth drivers' title.

Ferrari were supposed to close the gap this year after pushing Mercedes in recent years, while Red Bull's improvement through the 2019 campaign with Honda has raised hopes of their return to contention.

But any hopes of a three-way battle for supremacy in 2020 may be short-lived.

It has been reported by f1analisitecnica.com that a recent fire-up of a prototype '20 Mercedes engine has led to the suggestion that their step over the off-season could be as great as the one seen before the 214 campaign, when the team's dominance began.

This becomes all the more notable amid claims that F1's manufacturers could agree to a freeze on engine development ahead of the 2021 regulation changes in a bid to save money.
