Ricciardo upset at missing out on German GP fun
Daniel would have loved the closing stages!
Daniel Ricciardo admits he was frustrated to miss out on the “fun” at the German Grand Prix at the weekend, as he was forced to retire halfway through due to an exhaust failure.
The race at Hockenheim was hugely entertaining for the fans, and drivers too, as the rainfall made the track slick and difficult to negotiate for the competitors. No less than seven drivers, including the Australian, were forced to retire, while a significant portion of the grid slammed or nearly slammed into the barriers due to the ‘drag’ track to the left of the final turn.
It threw up a surprising top 10 as a result, with Daniil Kvyat of Toro Rosso managing to earn a podium spot.
Ricciardo says he would have liked the opportunity to do something similar if not for his car problem.
“It was an exhaust failure,” he explained.
“Everything else seems okay, nothing with the engine. I could see it a little bit in the cockpit and then I looked out of the mirror and I could see a lot of smoke from the exhaust.
“It’s a shame because I was watching the rest of the race and it looked, as a spectator, fun, and I would’ve loved to stay out there. There would’ve been a lot of opportunities… so I’m obviously frustrated with that.”
It was an unfortunate day for his team-mate Nico Hulkenberg also, who crashed out of contention for his first-ever podium spot due to the aforementioned, troublesome area of the track.
Ricciardo will be hoping to bounce back at this weekend’s Hungarian GP - an event where he won his second F1 race back in 2014.
