Stroll's epic German GP gamble raises £11,000 for charity

Lance Stroll secured a stunning fourth-place finish at the German Grand Prix thanks to a fine gamble by Racing Point, which banked £11,000 for Breast Cancer Care thanks to the SportPesa Grid That Gives initiative.

The team's title sponsor pledged to donate £1,000 for every place made up from the grid by Stroll and team-mate Sergio Perez from the British GP.

Stroll raised £5,000 at Silverstone by climbing to P13 from 18th on the grid, but it was a mighty haul at Hockenhiem, thanks to some nifty strategy on the Racing Point pitwall.

The Canadian was the first driver to pit for slick tyres after Nico Hulkenberg's crash with 15 laps remaining on a track that remained damp, doing so under the safety car, but it proved inspired as the rest of the field followed suit under green-flag conditions, which briefly put Stroll in the lead of the race.

Although he slipped back to fourth, it still earned a good chunk of cash to charity, having started in 15th.

He said of his race: "I'm really happy with that. What an amazing day!

"Fourth place feels great considering everything that happened this afternoon. I was running at the back for most of the race; I spun a couple of times and we pitted five times!

"Today's race shows why you should never give up because it's never over until it's over. It's great to see how much this result means to the team and it was so special to see the crew celebrating on the pit wall when I crossed the line.

"This important result is for everyone in the team and we will enjoy this moment."
