Hamilton responds to Canadian GP boos

Lewis Hamilton has responded to the negative reception he received from the fans at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve following the conclusion of the Canadian Grand Prix. After he won the race, he was booed by the crowd as they felt it was undeserved due to Sebastian Vettel being awarded a five-second penalty for an encounter between the two during the race.

At Turn 4, the German swerved off the track and, in his attempts to regain his line, cut across the path of Hamilton, who was looking to take advantage of the Ferrari’s wabble.

The stewards deemed that the move from Vettel was illegal, even though it seemed he had little choice if he wanted to avoid crashing into the adjacent wall.

The four-time world champion led the race from start to finish, but didn’t actually win due to the five-second penalty being taken into account following him crossing the line.

Vettel himself accused Mercedes of stealing the race from Ferrari.

Hamilton, who went on to win due to Vettel’s penalty, was forced to face the disgruntled crowd, who targeted him with boos, which he thinks was undeserved.

“I'm not a fan watching and there's a lot of Ferrari fans here,” he said.

“ I'm going to rewatch it. I didn't do anything to deserve it [the boos]. All I did was just race with my heart. Often they [fans] don't see it from all aspects. He [Vettel] made a mistake. It's hard not to make mistakes out there.”

Thanks to to the penalty, Mercedes continued their record of winning every race so far in the 2019 championship.
