Layout for new Rio de Janeiro track revealed

A fresh track layout for the proposed new circuit in Rio de Janeiro has been unveiled as the future of the Brazilian Grand Prix remains up in the air. Brazil's president Jair Bolsonaro recently claimed that the race would leave its current home at Interlagos, Sao Paulo to switch to Rio.

A new track is being constructed on the site of the Deodoro military base, which was used as a hosting venue in the 2016 Olympic Games.

However, the switch is not yet clear-cut. Interlagos are understandably keen to keep hold of the race, and has a contract until 2020.

Suggestions of a switch next year certainly seem to have been blown out of the water, with claims that the new circuit will take 18 months to build.

"The proposal we have brought to Rio seeks to present a picture of a modern track - dynamic and full of emotion," said circuit designer Hermann Tilke.

"At the same time, we think of a space with a multidisciplinary approach that allows a very wide range of use in other sports, serving the whole community."

The building will be undertaken by Rio Motorsports, having successfully bid for the project.

"Winning is the conclusion of work that began more than four years," said Rio Motorsports CEO JR Pereira.

"We have put together the very best in the world in terms of technical capacity to guarantee Rio de Janeiro a race track with the most modern motorsports in the world."
