Verstappen handed FIA punishment over Ocon scuffle
Max Vertappen was ordered by the FIA to complete "two days of public service" over his set-to with Esteban Ocon following the Brazilian Grand Prix. Verstappen shoved the Force India driver multiple times in the weighing room after a collision between the pair cost him a likely win.
Verstappen looked set to cruise home for a second victory on the spin, but back-marking Ocon's attempts to unlap himself would prove costly as their pair made contact at turn two and were sent into a spin.
Lewis Hamilton cruised through the scene and went on to secure victory for Mercedes, who won a fifth successive constructors' title as a result.
Verstappen sustained floor damage as a result of the crash and could not catch Hamilton over the remaining 25 laps.
After the race, Verstappen confronted Ocon in the weighing room, as well as savaging him in his numerous media commitments, calling the Frenchman a "pussy" and "idiot".
The stewards' report noted that both drivers "acted appropriately and cooperated" during their hearing.
Happy to finish 2nd, but we should have won today. The car was brilliant and @redbullracing came with a great strategy. Our race pace was better than expected and we did everything well today. Their findings read: "The stewards understood from Max Verstappen that he was extremely upset by the incident on track during the race and accepted his explanation that it was not his original intent to strike Ocon, but that he was 'triggered' And caused him to lose his temper.
"While sympathetic to Verstappen's passion, the stewards determined that it is the obligation of sportsmen at this level to act appropriately and as role models to other drivers at all levels and found that Verstappen failed in this respect."
Verstappen must serve his two days of service within six months of Sunday's race. The sanction is similar to the one given to Sebastian Vettel last year for banging wheels with Lewis Hamilton behind the safety car at the Azerbaijan GP.
