Why FIA chose not to use MotoGP pit lane exit for F1
FIA race director Michael Masi has revealed the MotoGP pit lane exit at Portimão had to be ruled out for F1 across the Portuguese Grand Prix weekend.
F1's solution at the exit of the pit lane feeds cars into the pinch-point of the high-speed apex of turn one, however, eagle-eyed viewers noticed a feed-through on the inside of the first corner from the helicopter shots of the race used by MotoGP.
When questioned as to why that option was not used, Masi explained the lay-out was dismissed following an initial investigation.
"It was reviewed," confirmed Masi. "The FIA and FIM [governing body for motorcycles], we have a fantastic relationship.
"Myself and Franco Uncini, the MotoGP safety inspector and safety delegate, speak frequently about common matters between us.
"The pit exit that was used for MotoGP works for them. We looked at it and in its current form it would not be suitable for cars at all."
McLaren driver Lando Norris used the alternative exit lane during qualifying to avoid holding up a faster car, with Masi suggesting his experience proved his safety team correct.
"I think Lando used it accidentally trying to get out of the way, trying not to unnecessarily impede someone," added Masi.
"He found out very quickly it is not suitable or safe from a motor vehicle perspective."
