FIA take extra safety precautions for Sakhir GP at Grosjean crash site
The FIA has increased safety measures at the site of Romain Grosjean's fiery crash for this weekend's Sakhir Grand Prix.
Formula 1 returns to Bahrain just a few days after one of the worst accidents seen in the sport's recent history, and marvelling at the fact Grosjean escaped with nothing more serious than burns to the backs of his hands and a sprained left ankle.
The fact Grosjean's Haas speared through a guardrail at turn three of the Bahrain International Circuit, with an impact speed of 130mph and at a force of 53g, has naturally led to the FIA opting to improve protection at that corenr ahead of this weekend's race.
Although the Outer Track is being deployed, it incorporates a significant part of the circuit that was used in Sunday's race, including turn three.
To that end, a tyre barrier comprising two rows of rubber and with a conveyor belt has been installed in front of the guardrail between turns three and four.
In relation to the nature of the Outer Track itself, a tyre barrier on the right-hand side of turn nine is to be extended and increased in depth to four rows of tyres with conveyor belt.
Additionally, the right-hand kerb between turns eight and nine is to be removed to reduce the risk of a car becoming airborne.
The FIA has confirmed the changes are being made in accordance with Circuit Licence conditions of issue, ensuring the Bahrain International Circuit retains its grade one licence.
