Vettel gives the thumbs up to tighter track limits policing

Sebastian Vettel has voiced his support for the strict policing of track limits in 2020 despite being caught out by the system during last weekend's British Grand Prix.

Although the Ferrari driver had his best time deleted from Q3 at Silverstone after exceeding track limits at the flat-out Copse corner, Vettel is a fan of the system employed by Formula 1.

“I think it works, and it doesn’t leave any doubts," said Vettel. "If you trigger the sensor you trigger the loop, so I think it’s fairly straightforward.

“It’s better than sending someone there and policing it manually, let's say, so it’s fairly reliable and has worked well.”

Vettel ended Friday practice ahead of this weekend's 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at the Northamptonshire circuit inspecting his SF1000 on the side of the track after suffering an engine failure that forced him to pull over six minutes from the end of FP2.

The four-time F1 champion only set a time good enough for 14th as his struggles from the British GP appeared to spill over.

Ahead of the weekend, team principal Mattia Binotto had claimed Ferrari had unlocked a couple of tenths of a second in performance.

Remarking on this, Vettel said: “It looked like we were running less wing here than other people and it helped our competitiveness down the straights.

"But obviously we were paying for some of that in the corners, so people are still pretty much racing in the same place.”
