Allison cautiously optimistic Silverstone could be "pretty special" for Mercedes

Mercedes technical director James Allison is hopeful of strong back-to-back weekends at Silverstone, a circuit he believes will highlight the strengths of the W11.

Mercedes has taken victory in each of the opening three races of the season and, although not wanting to tempt fate, Allison is hopeful the Silver Arrows can keep the streak going.

Speaking after the Hungarian Grand Prix, Allison said: "We're looking forward to it, but I think anyone who's been doing this for a little while will remember times when they thought 'Oh I can't wait to go to blah blah' and we're really going to show them.

"Then you get there and you don't quite deliver everything you'd hoped and it's a very depressing experience having got your hopes sky-high.

"But most things about the car would make you feel that Silverstone will be a track that will be pretty special for it, but it feels very fate tempting to say something like that."

After only three races, Mercedes top the constructors standings with 121-points, a total that is more than double second placed Red Bull's haul of 55-points.

Ferrari sits on just 27-points in fifth, and while Allison believes Mercedes has made progress with the 2020 car, he also believes this progress has been exaggerated by the problems of its competitors.

He added: "In points terms we are, absolutely in points [we are stronger in 2020] relative to our competition because our main competition have stumbled once or twice at the finish line, so we have a very decent points lead.

"In qualifying, we've looked very strong for a couple of races now.

"The race day though is tougher. The margin is not the same size in the race that it has been in qualifying.

"I'd say yeah, we're a sneak ahead of where we were in the overall power of the team this year than w were the year before."
