"Putting up FIA stewards at each team base" would ensure "fair competition" - Seidl

McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl has suggested basing FIA stewards at the headquarters of each Formula 1 team to ensure regulations are being followed at all times.

The regulations in F1 have remained relatively stable for the past few seasons, and as a result, teams have been forced to push the envelope to extract the maximum performance possible.

Over the past twelve months, this pushing of the boundaries has resulted in FIA investigations into the Ferrari power unit and the design process of listed parts on the 2020 Racing Point RP20.

In May, the FIA launched a whistleblowing hotline to alert the authorities to potential foul play, and while pledging support to this Seidl suggested: “We would be open also to support the FIA in putting up FIA stewards, for example, at each team base, simply to make sure that it is also clear to each team that there is no room for not following the rules.

"Like with the whistleblowing concept, it is important for every team to know there is a huge risk that, if you do not follow the rules, it actually gets detected and they get penalised for it, because I think this mechanism of threatening helps as well.

“It makes sure everyone plays according to the same rules, which is key to the competition we are in, because we all want a fair competition between all the teams.”

Pressed on how this idea could be enacted, Seidl admitted: “I didn’t think about that in detail yet.

"That’s just one idea we would welcome for example, because we think that could be one measure to simply have an even sport, to make the control even better, and it would probably help to avoid all these discussions and protests that are around at the moment."
