Could F1 consider midweek races 'like the Champions League'?
Jan Lammers puts forwards an alternative
Dutch Grand Prix boss Jan Lammers suggests that Formula 1 considers midweek races, 'just like the Champions League'.
Lammers has proposed that Formula 1 follow the example of football by holding midweek events rather than sticking rigidly to competing at weekends.
Speaking to the Dutch publication NOS, Lammers said, “Why can’t a grand prix be held on Tuesday or Wednesday night, just like the Champions League?”
“It doesn’t always have to be on primetime Sunday afternoon, but it can also be on weekdays. But then you have to make the weekends a little lighter so that there is less pressure on the organising countries.”
While the majority of people are lamenting the postponed or cancelled races, Lammers sees this difficult period as an opportunity for Formula 1 to grow in different ways.
“I think the corona crisis, both economic and sporting, will be three steps backwards, but also two steps forward,” continued Lammers.
“Because we are all learning from this situation. We are also learning what we can do all of a sudden. So there are not only disadvantages to it.”
