This was 'redemption', says Ricciardo

A jubilant Daniel Ricciardo has admitted that his superb Monaco Grand Prix win was 'redemption' for 2016, after a supreme drive despite suffering power issues from midway through the race, holding off the challenge of Sebastian Vettel for the precious victory.

In 2016 Ricciardo was on pole and was in good shape until an error in the pit lane, where his tyres weren't ready to be fitted, cost him victory and has been playing on the Aussie's mind ever since.

Ricciardo was fastest for the entirety of the weekend and managed to overcome a testing spell mid-race, where power issues limited him to six gears, allowing Vettel to get close, but ultimately Red Bull prevailed.

Speaking at the end of the race, Ricciardo could not hide his delight.

"[I feel] good. I think I can show more emotion today than yesterday. This is two years in the making and it's redemption. We had problems during the race, we had loss of power and we got home using just six gears. But I'm stoked.

"There was a few doubts that came in but I just won Monaco and it feels good. Thanks to everyone for their support."

Ricciardo triumphed ahead of Vettel, with Lewis Hamilton a muted and distant third, while Ricciardo's team-mate Max Verstappen cut through the field after beginning at the back of the grid to finish in ninth position.

Ricciardo later revealed that the issue prevented him from using his highest two gears, putting the scale of his achievement into an even more impressive context.

"I thought my race was over when I went down on power. I had half the power it seemed and I felt like it was going to come to a stop," he told Channel 4.

"For a few seconds I just wanted to close my eyes and start crying. I was only using six gears, our car has eight. I had just enough power to get into sixth. We did it, but it sucked.

"This was redemption, it's been two years in the making. I still don't know how we did it but we did. Now get me a drink."
