Why Verstappen was unable to celebrate second title triumph
Why Verstappen was unable to celebrate second title triumph
Max Verstappen has conceded that the focus on clinching Red Bull's first constructors' title since 2013 means he was unable to celebrate his second championship victory in Japan.
The Dutchman was confirmed as a double champion after a dominant win in treacherous conditions at Suzuka, where he finished almost half a minute ahead of his rivals despite the race being reduced to a 40-minute sprint.
The result meant Verstappen joined a host of F1 legends with multiple world championships, becoming the second-youngest double world champion, beaten only by Sebastian Vettel.
Verstappen arrives at Austin for the United States Grand Prix, knowing two wins from the last four races will surpass Michael Schumacher and Vettel's record of 13 victories in a single season.
Red Bull is also likely to confirm itself as team's champion in the next two races, with Ferrari 165 points behind.
"It was special to secure the drivers’ championship in Japan," said Verstappen.
"I didn’t get the chance to celebrate too much as we’re still focussed on securing the constructors’ championship for the team.
"The ultimate goal is of course to win both, but we need to keep our heads down, it will come if we keep performing well.
"I’m looking forward to the remaining races. It’s great to be back in Austin, I love the city and the track.
"Winning here last year was amazing and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do this weekend."
