Carlos Sainz took an enthralling victory at the British Grand Prix to become the 112th driver to achieve success in F1.

Reigning champion and current title-leader Max Verstappen, meanwhile, suffered a frustrating race due to damage to his Red Bull.

Although Verstappen managed to limit the personal damage by finishing seventh, his main rivals all closed the gap at the top of the standings.

Hamilton makes yet more history, not all of it good

Lewis Hamilton stood on the podium for the 13th time at Silverstone, a feat no other driver has achieved at any other circuit. The number is boosted by his success in last year's 70th Anniversary GP that took place at the track.

He also became the first driver to lead a lap in 16 consecutive seasons.

A slightly unwanted record for Hamilton, however, is that he is now officially on his longest winless streak in F1 of 11 races stretching back to last year's Saudi Arabian GP.

Russell run at an end

George Russell was part of the monumental crash on the opening lap of the race. Unable to restart, it ended the Mercedes driver's streak of top-five finishes this year.

The race also ended at turn one for Zhou Guanyu and Alex Albon. For all three, it was their first opening-lap retirement in F1.

Sainz breaks Maldonado record

Carlos Sainz became the 112th F1 winner, and only the second from Spain, the other being Fernando Alonso.

Sainz is also the first since Pastor Maldonado [at the 2012 Spanish GP] to convert his maiden F1 pole to a maiden race win. The last Ferrari driver to achieve this feat was Felipe Massa at the 2006 Turkish GP.

For Sainz, the victory came from his 150th race start, the second-longest wait after Sergio Perez [190 starts], and he is also the first driver since Johnny Herbert in 1995 to score their first win on British soil.

Verstappen's remarkable podium streak ends

Verstappen dropped out of the lead after he lost pace on lap 13 due to floor damage, eventually finishing seventh.

It is the first race, though, in which he has taken the chequered flag but not been on the podium since last year's Hungarian GP, a run of 17 grands prix. His car also suffered floor damage on that occasion.

After front-wing damage forced Sergio Perez to pit early in the race, dropping to 17th, he recovered to finish second to mark his best result at Silverstone.

Schumacher off the mark

It has been a long wait for Mick Schumacher to finally score his first F1 points but he secured four after finishing eighth at the 31st attempt.

With Kevin Magnussen 10th and also in the points, it was Haas' first double-points finish since the 2019 German GP.

Alonso joins Hamilton-Vettel club

Fifth place for Fernando Alonso saw him cross the 2000-point threshold, a mark only previously reached by Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.

Alonso also now owns the record for the most kilometres raced in F1 - 92,643 - after surpassing Kimi Raikkonen's tally on Sunday.

Latifi on the rise

Nicholas Latifi is now the only score-less full-time driver but 12th position was enough to move him ahead of Nico Hulkenberg and off the foot of the table.
