Russell turns engineer in bid to help Williams
George Russell has revealed to turning his hand to engineering in a bid to help Williams 'try new things' with set up since ending its development plan for the F1 season.
After failing to score a point in his first two years with Williams, Russell has registered top-10 finishes in four of the last seven races, including a maiden podium in Belgium.
Although developments have not been forthcoming since the summer break, Russell explained the team has used set-up changes to continue its progress.
“We know the package we’ve got, we know we’ve got nothing more to bring so what can we do with the package when we’ve got to try and find even more performance," said Russell.
"I’m enjoying that, delving into the engineering side even more to try new things.
“To be honest, since the summer break, we’ve been trying a lot of different directions and philosophies with the set up of the car and I think I’m just enjoying that side of things and expanding my knowledge further on the technical side of things.”
In the constructors' standings, Williams is currently eighth, 16 points clear of Alfa Romeo, a margin Russell feels has given the team a "unique" opportunity to experiment.
“You’ve got to look at the global picture and I think we probably developed as far into the season as the majority of the teams," added Russell.
"But I think it’s given us a unique situation to try more things from a race engineering perspective, try a different set up from the car."
