Hamilton ready to "raise Mercedes higher" with Russell as team-mate

Lewis Hamilton is convinced he and George Russell can "raise Mercedes higher" after his fellow Briton was confirmed as his team-mate from next season.

Hamilton and Russell will partner one another for at least the next two years as the seven-time F1 champion earlier this season signed a contract to cover 2022 and 2023, while the latter has agreed to a long-term deal in moving from Williams.

The move throws up the tantalising prospect of the experienced campaigner going up against a rising star who will be eager to usurp him as champion.

Writing on social media, Hamilton said: "I want to take a moment to welcome George Russell to the team.

"I remember meeting him when he was young, dreaming of one day being a Formula 1 driver.

"I'd only just reached my own dream of becoming an F1 driver, so I know what this day means and how it will feel for him.

"He is a great example to all the kids out there that dreams do come true when you chase them wholeheartedly. Through hard work, he has rightly earned his spot on our team.

"I look forward to seeing him grow as a driver with this great team and working with him to raise Mercedes higher.

"See you next year."
