Should half points have been awarded for the Belgian Grand Prix?

Should half points have been awarded for the Belgian Grand Prix?
GPFans Staff

The decision to award half points for the Belgian Grand Prix has led to considerable criticism.

It is only the sixth time in F1's 71-year history half points have been issued, although on the previous five occasions the fans in attendance at least saw racing.

At the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, F1's rain-soaked followers saw nothing but four laps in total behind the safety car, with no actual racing taking place.

Lewis Hamilton believes the only reason the drivers were sent out on track in the treacherous conditions was that "money talks".

McLaren CEO Zak Brown appreciates that while the rules have been adhered to on this occasion, he feels a precedent has been set that now requires a review as to what constitutes a race.

So take part in our poll below and let us know whether it was the right call to award half points, and make sure you post a comment in the section further down.

Was it right for half points to be awarded in the Belgian GP?

There is no question about it. This was not a race! Following the safety car for four odd laps does not constitute a race. There should have been nil points awarded. For anyone. I'm not familiar with the technical facts that Lewis refers to, so I haven't anything to write about that but it's obvious to everyone that a race never took place!!

From a points perspective: The race was on Saturday

From a 'ticket for the Sunday race' perspective: there was no race... :(

Wasn't really a race so no points should be awarded but its all about not giving back peoples monies, half points mean everybody saw a race

Definition of a "race": compete with another or others to see who is fastest at covering a set course or achieving an objective.

Someone explain to me how following a safety car constitutes racing, when you can only hold position and cannot "compete". The FIA got it wrong and the rules need to reflect that. The teams should all appeal the decision and let the lawyers decide. Guaranteed, Red Bull would have appealed had they not had the pole position.

Ridiculous decision. There was no race just a procession behind the safety car for 4 laps.
