Mercedes will leave "no performance on the table" in Red Bull fight
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has vowed the seven-time championship-winning team will leave 'nothing on the table' in its title defence against Red Bull.
Mercedes has been the dominant force in F1 since the start of the V6 turbo-hybrid era in 2014, winning drivers' and constructors' championship doubles each season.
The Silver Arrows holds a 12 point advantage in this season's title race after Red Bull scored just two points in two races before the summer break.
Asked by GPFans Global what marginal gains could be the difference between finishing first or second in the standings, Wolff explained: "The words 'marginal gains' are a copyright of Sir Dave Brailsford who invented that many years ago for his cycling team.
"I think it is about really leaving no performance on the table, minimising mistakes, and that may at the end contribute to winning or not winning, and it could be with the tiniest of margins."
In 2022, F1 teams will race with radically altered aerodynamic regulations.
With a cost cap in place for the first time this year, teams have been forced to decide whether to continue developing current machinery or focus on next season.
Mercedes has made no secret of the fact it ceased development of the W12 some time ago with the final upgrades arriving at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Reconfirming this, Wolff explained: "All there is, is all we have."
