Ferrari claim "no serious damage" to Leclerc gearbox after first inspection

Ferrari has revealed there is "no serious damage" to the gearbox on Charles Leclerc's car following an initial inspection.

Leclerc crashed his SF21 into a guardrail at the end of qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, severely damaging the car.

On home soil, Leclerc was on provisional pole when collecting the inside barrier at the second part of the swimming pool complex, sending his car spearing into an outside rail.

The incident immediately brought out the red flags and ensured Leclerc would be on pole position after previously setting the best lap time earlier in the session.

There was immediate concern, however, that the gearbox would be damaged, so necessitating a change and an automatic five-place grid penalty.

But Ferrari has since confirmed: "An initial inspection of the gearbox in Charles Leclerc's car has not revealed any serious damage.

"Further checks will be carried out tomorrow to decide if the same gearbox can be used in the race."
