Sergio Perez has confirmed a security guard was shot in an attempted robbery that took place at his family home in Mexico.

A member of the Perez family's security detail was injured in an incident at their residence in Guadalajara whilst the Mexican was in Monaco preparing for qualifying.

The bodyguard's condition is as yet unknown but Perez confirmed the police had detained those involved.

He explained: “Basically they tried to rob the car of my security and they hurt one of my security guards with one shot but they basically tried to rob the car and nothing else going on. The police got the robbers.”

Asked if his family was targeted in the incident, Perez added: “No. My family is good thank you.”

The Red Bull driver regularly travels between his UK base and family home when breaks allow in his racing schedule.

Notably, last year Perez returned to visit his ill mother, a journey that led to him missing the British double-header after contracting Covid-19.
