Schumacher has 'nothing to prove' on F1 debut - Leclerc

Charles Leclerc insists Mick Schumacher has 'nothing to prove' during his maiden Formula 1 outing with Alfa Romeo at the Nürburgring.

F2 championship leader Schumacher will make his F1 debut on Friday when taking part in the first practice session ahead of the Eifel Grand Prix in place of Antonio Giovinazzi.

As the son of a seven-time world champion, Schumacher is no stranger to driving under immense pressure and scrutiny, but Leclerc has advised the German to simply enjoy his first experience of an F1 practice run out.

“Looking at the conditions of this weekend it is probably not the easiest of debuts," said the Ferrari driver. "But speaking to him, I think every time he tried a Formula 1 car or a new car it was always in the rain so it won’t change much for him.

“It is going to be a tricky session but he doesn’t have to prove anything. I think he has proved everything he had to in Formula 2 this season and I’m sure he will do a great job.”

Sebastian Vettel echoed the comments of his team-mate, adding that he hopes to see Schumacher on the grid in 2021.

"He deserves his shot this weekend," said Vettel. "Hopefully we will see him not only on Friday but hopefully another Friday this year and then hopefully in a car in a race seat next year."

“I think that is what I wish for him.
