Alfa Romeo team principal Frédéric Vasseur has hailed Mick Schumacher as "a champion in the making"

Schumacher will make his first appearance in a Formula 1 session at the Nürburgring for the Eifel Grand Prix on October 9, when he drives for Alfa Romeo in first practice.

The German, who currently tops the standings in the feeder F2 championship, has long been connected with a 2021 drive with the Ferrari customer team.

The rumours will only intensify should Schumacher impress in the 90-minute session in which he replaces Antonio Giovinazzi.

“There is no doubt that Mick is one of the great talents coming through the feeder series’ ranks and his recent results have been showing it," said Vasseur.

"He is obviously quick, but he is also consistent and mature behind the wheel – all hallmarks of a champion in the making.

"He impressed us with his approach and work ethic on those occasions he was with us last year and we are looking forward to working with him once more at the Nürburgring."

To gain the required number of FIA super license points to enter F1, Schumacher must finish at least sixth in the 2020 F2 standings.

That is an achievement the German has all but secured as he is currently 51 points clear of sixth-placed Nikita Mazepin with a maximum of 80 available.

For the romantics, Schumacher joining Alfa Romeo, the team formerly known as Sauber, would spark memories of Michael Schumacher competing in the World Sportscar championship with the marque in the iconic Mercedes C11.
