Kimi Antonelli took the F1 title but it was Max Verstappen who kept up his excellent form to take a win at the Mexican Grand Prix.
The Red Bull driver took his third win in four races to storm into second in the championship, taking advantage of the squabbling Ferraris of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc who threw away a one-two finish.
Hamilton came second, with Antonelli in third and Leclerc in fourth.
But there was late drama behind them on the grid, with three drivers initially finishing in the points copping late penalties from the stewards acting on behalf of the FIA.
Oscar Piastri had finished seventh on the road but was handed a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision with Racing Bull's Arvid Lindlbad, dropping him out of the points.
Franco Colapinto was eighth for Alpine but failing to slow for yellow flags saw him pick up a 10-second too to drop him out of the top 10.
If that wasn't bad enough for Alpine, Gasly too was hit by the stewards for going too quickly through double waved yellow flags, earning him a post-race stop/go penalty to drop him out of the points.
This promoted the likes of Gabriel Bortoleto, Isack Hadjar and Haas's F1 debutant Ry Hirakawa into the points.
