On This Day - Alain Prost wins his first Brazilian Grand Prix

Alain Prost has enjoyed more success than any other driver in the history of the Brazilian Grand Prix, taking six wins, but his first came with Renault in 1982 after Nelson Piquet was disqualified for running in an underweight Brabham.

Prost was at the top of his game at the Jacarepaguá Circuit on the weekend of March 20-21 in 1982. Having taken pole on the Saturday, the Frenchman also set the fastest lap as he crossed the line to finish the race in second The position.

However, a post race disqualification for Piquet, the man whom the circuit would later be renamed after, stripped the Brabham driver of a home victory and saw the trophy lifted by Prost.

The Brazilian Grand Prix was the second race on the 1982 calendar and, although Prost had already taken victory in the South Africa season opener at Kyalami, a run of seven retirements in the remaining 14-races saw Prost finish fourth in the standings.

Keke Rosberg famously continued on to win the championship for Williams with just a single win to his name - the French Grand Prix.
