Verstappen on 2020 championship race: We'll try anything we can
Can Red Bull be there right from the start in 2020?
Max Verstappen aims to end Mercedes' dominance of Formula One in 2020, but says that Red Bull can't afford another slow start to the year if they are serious in their targets.
Prior to the introduction of the V6 turbo-hybrid power units in 2014, it had been Red Bull and not Mercedes who were enjoying a spell of dominance. Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull took four consecutive drivers' and constructors' championship doubles between 2010 and 2013, but the team have struggled to find form ever since.
Even in 2019, a year where praise was again heaped on Verstappen for his battling performances, the team could only register three successes.
Talking to Motorsport.com, Verstappen said: "I think we are in the right direction. There's no question about that.
"Now, it's just about how much development we can push through for next year. I more or less know, I just hope it's going to be enough.
"Next year, there are no real changes in the regulations anyway, so you can just build on what you have now. And with a second year working with Honda, I think that should help.
"We massively improved the performance of the engine. I think we know where we have to improve on, we've already improved on the car."
In recent years, Red Bull have struggled to hit the ground running when compared to Mercedes or Ferrari, and Verstappen knows that this needs to be addressed if he is to achieve his goals.
"We know that we have to be there from the start if you want to fight for the championship," he continued.
"So we are putting all our efforts into that. It's not going to be easy, but we're going to go for it. We're going to try everything we can."
