Alonso: Everyone tells me to come back to F1
Will Fernando ever return?
Fernando Alonso says he has been told many times this year that he ought to return to Formula 1, despite not missing his previous life in the series.
Two-time world champion Alonso quit F1 at the end of 2018, having spent four years in a struggling McLaren team that saw his talents go somewhat wasted in the lower reaches of the field.
A failed bid to secure the 'Triple Crown' with victory at the Indianapolis 500 followed in 2019, while the Spaniard may look to add another famous race win to his resume in 2020 at the Dakar Rally.
F1's new set of regulations in 2021 could tempt Alonso back, although he has suggested in the past that he would only consider returning with a team capable of race wins.
"I don't think about it today. This year I haven't missed F1," Alonso said on Spanish TV show 'El Hormiguero'.
"However, I still see the training, timetables and races of F1.
"In 2021 there will be a new regulation and if there is a possibility of returning I will think about it, but I cannot predict the future.
"I usually see the races when I am on trips. When I watch it at home I am more relaxed.
"About returning to F1 I have to reveal one thing. The phrase I have heard the most since last year is, 'You have to come back'."
Alonso has kept himself busy after leaving F1, competing in WEC, IndyCar, IMSA, as well as testing with Toyota ahead of a tilt at the Dakar Rally.
He said: "When you leave F1 you are supposed to rest, but that has not been my case.
"It has been a great year because I became World Endurance champion. I won Daytona, 24 Hours of Le Mans. I missed the Indy 500, but I will try again."
