Marquez crowned MotoGP champion again in Thailand

Marc Marquez secured his eighth world title – and sixth at MotoGP level – with a last-corner victory at the Thai GP.

The Spaniard has dominated motorcycle racing in recent years and has only been denied the championship once since stepping up to the premier class in 2013.

The high-profile arrival of Jorge Lorenzo, the only man to deny Marquez a championship in 2015, has done nothing to prevent Marquez's steamroller success as Lorenzo struggled to adapt to the Repsol Honda then suffered a nasty injury at Assen.

Andrea Dovizioso has been Marquez's closest challenger once again in 2019, but the Ducati man has once again struggled to match his rival's stunning consistency, giving Marquez an eighth world crown at just 26.

Marquez needed to outscore Dovizioso by two points to secure the championship, but made an inauspicious start to the weekend with a nasty highside in first practice.

He recovered to qualify third behind Maverick Vinales and top rookie Fabio Quartararo, with Dovizioso seventh on the grid.

The battle played out between Quartararo and Marquez for victory, with the Italian holding firm throughout until a trademark last-lap assault from the champion.

Passing the 20-year-old in the final corner, Marquez secured his ninth victory in 15 races this year, burnished by five second-place finishes and a DNF in the United States to represent one of the most dominant premier-class campaigns of all time.
