Ferrari return likely for Alfa Romeo boss after replacement confirmed

Simone Resta has moved closer to securing a return to Ferrari after Alfa Romeo confirmed his departure from his role as technical director, as well as his replacement.

Resta left Ferrari for Hinwil in May 2018, having previously served as the Scuderia's chief designer, where he was seen as a key figure in the Ferrari cars of 2017 and 2018 that pushed Mercedes hard in the aerodynamic stakes.

This year's car, the SF90, does not appear to hold as much strength in this area, however, with Mercedes having taken seven one-two finishes in 10 races so far, while Ferrari are yet to win.

Team principal Mattia Binotto flagged a potential return for Resta ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix earlier this year, and that now appears close to completion.

Commenting on his departure, scheduled for the end of the month, Alfa chief Fred Vasseur said: "I want to thank Simone for his contribution to the progression of the team and I wish him all the best for his future appointments."

Resta will be replaced in his role by Alfa's current head of aerodynamics Jan Monchaux, who will begin his new job on August 1.

Vasseur added: "I am delighted to have him step up to the role of Technical Director. He has done a brilliant job so far and I am confident he will be able to lead our technical group as the team continues its upward journey."
