Zandvoort should have grid girls, says politician

Matthew Scott

A Dutch political party wants to bring grid girls back to Formula 1 as the Dutch Grand Prix prepares to return to the calendar for the first time in 35 years. The PVV party says F1's decision to get rid of the models is simply a form of "female patronisation".

Liberty Media ditched grid girls last year, saying it went against the family values being sought by F1.

Models, female and male, have appeared on the grid in Monaco the past two years, but drivers have been accompanied by grid kids pre-race at every event.

F1 returns to Zandvoort last year, having last raced in the Netherlands in 1985, and the PVV party are seeking a return to F1's past in some regards.

MP Roy van Aalst said: "The decision that the FIA has taken is the umpteenth form of female patronisation. Grid girls belong just as much to Formula 1 as the cars.

"Only one a huge idiot can see a beautiful woman as a problem. The rest of the people love it.

"It is part of motorsport and the PVV wants us to ensure that next year this beautiful tradition will be restored to its former glory!"
